It is a matched needle size to the material being sewn for a 15x1. I believe it is around 15oz but have not verified it yet. However, I mostly use a size 19 or 20 needle to do the super thick canvas. I have used a size 16 needle but not a jeans needle just a regular needle. I use a Kenmore but why would it be any different on a 15-91. I sew super thick/heavy canvas regularly. You think the shellac won't build up because of the oil but it does. I used one those sewing machine oil syringes to apply the oil. Leave rubbing pad in jar when not in use. Also I make very small batches of flakes mixed with alcohol in a small jar with a cover. You have to make a tiny rubbing pad because it's a small area. The guy I learned from to youtube said to use linen for the rubbing pad. The ratio of shellac to alcohol changes as alcohol evaporates. It's way better than before and I'm happy with how it came out. I would need sand a lot and apply many layers to correct. Someone tried to apply shellac with a brush. You can't see in the picture but the bed is not perfectly smooth.

feeling lazy plus the machine has other issues. I still have to rewire it and replace the wicks. The bed was in rough condition and the decals are worn. The motor is off because I had to clean all gunk out. Hi Chaly, Here's the 15-91 I french polished last winter. These straps are copies of the old, worn out straps that came with this accordion.

I suspect it would have acted the same with chafing in the leather and wool. I could probably have used a size 22 needle and been able to sew with power, but not sure if the thread would still have galled like it did. Then a top layer of leather is put on and the whole sewed together, making 2 layers of leather and 2 layers of Melton cloth. The center layer of leather has the wool backing, with the sides of the wool folded over and glued to the leather. The straps are a lamination of leather and black Melton cloth wool. I used buttonhole twist in black for the bottom, then put black acyrlic paint on the upper thread to blend them in. The DBx1 size 20 needle worked fine, but I had to use the hand wheel to go slow enough to not have the upper upholstery thread (nylon) start to gall or shred.

I recently did a set of accordion straps (and later added the bass strap on the left side, made the same) which I made on the Universal. I'm not positive, but I think available sizes outside of special order for the 15x1 don't go above size 18. These needles do not deflect or bend like the domestic 15x1 does. Also, in larger sizes it becomes the DBx5 and goes up in sizes to resemble a finishing nail. This is why I got a Japanese Universal 700 Deluxe on Shopgoodwill and modified it to take the DBx1 needle which is a round shank industrial needle with a longer, more solid shank, but overall the same dimensions otherwise to the 15x1. The stitching sample shows what I expected - your needle is being deflected on each contact with the heavy cord of the canvas.

These are some terrible, terrible photos that you probably never imagined you could glean useful information from yet we can figure out the models in them if we know what to look for. If you were able to pick some of these up, hopefully you've amazed yourself. Terribly dark photo, but the slightest irregularity in the handwheel shape shows you a potted motor is hiding back there. Potted motor is visible but with white tape on it, tricky.
